Green is the new black when it comes to interior decorating. This is from the heightened consciousness in people wanting to find newer ways they can contribute to saving the planet and leave fewer carbon footprints while they decorate their homes. There are some easy ways in which you too can join in saving the environment by creating an environmentally-friendly living space.

When considering your furniture you want to choose wood or any type of furniture that is made from natural material. The best thing to do is to buy furniture that is second hand. Buying second hand furniture can decrease the amount of trees that are cut in order to make the furniture. Avoid buying furniture that is made with toxic material. Choose natural or renewable material instead.

If your home already has hardwood flooring down then you may want to just refurbish that. If you do want a different look then choose from bamboo flooring, stones, linoleum, cork, reclaimed wood, recycled glass, or metal tiles. Instead of carpet and padding try carpet tiles instead. Carpeting can accumulate dust, mites, and mildew so take this into consideration before buying any carpet.

Alternatively, for those undesirable spots on your floor, an area rug would really come in handy. Pick one that is made from sustainable, 100% natural fibers as these will be a good addition to your go-green campaign. You may even find area rugs made from recyclable and biodegradable materials if you look hard enough.

For your walls, avoid paints that contain high VOC contents - volatile organic compounds, which are emitted in gaseous form and are toxic chemicals that can lead to health complications for members of your household. Check paint labels before you buy them, as you may also find eco-friendly paints at your hardware store.

When it comes to buying bedding or bed linen you want to go with organic cotton. This type of cotton is a natural fiber so it is free from synthetic chemicals that can be dangerous. Make sure the bedding you choose is treated with a non-toxic water based dye. Don’t choose bedding that is treated with formaldehyde. Mattresses should be made from latex rubber.

When it comes to making a bathroom eco-friendly there are a couple of things you can do. One is to purchase urinals that do not require water. You may also want to find a dual-flush toilet that conserves water.

Furniture should be vintage and you can find this almost any second hand shop. This will give your home an elegant feeling. Buy accessories that are multi-functional, meaning that you can use them in different rooms when you want to change the look. Look for companies that specialize in eco friendly furniture. This will help the environment and help your family.
