HI Again. It’s the Affordable Storage Guy here with more suggestions on how to pack your appliances and garage items for storage.
I’d like to start with the large appliances. Make sure that the appliances are clean and dry and all moving parts are secure. Your smaller appliances should be cleaned as well and, if it works, you can pack them together. Just be sure to add enough padding in between them so that they don’t shift during the move.
Taping the electrical cords to the appliances prevents them from getting tangled or lost. Removing knobs from appliances and putting them in Ziploc bags is also a great idea.
Washing Machines - First, make sure that there is no water in the machine and that the water has been drained from all hoses. Then, put some padding in between the tub and the walls of the machine.
Dishwashers - Again, make sure that all water has been drained from the hoses and the interior of the dishwasher. Make sure all movable parts are wrapped or taped so that their secure during the move.
Stove - Make sure the stove is properly disconnected by a service man from the electrical or gas company. Clean thoroughly and pack away all the loose pieces found in the lower drawer. Remove broiler pan and racks. Secure burners, elements and trays with tape to prevent shifting.
Refrigerators and Freezers - Defrost and clean at least 36 hours before moving and allow time to thoroughly dry. Secure door during move but keep door open slightly during storage to help prevent mildew. The inside may be used to store bulky lightweight items such as pillows and stuffed toys. Check with your manufacturer if you have a refrigerator with automatic ice and water capabilities in the door. You may need special instructions for storage and hooking up this type of refrigerator in your new home.
Electronic Equipment - These items should be repacked in their original shipping containers with foam inserts. If the original boxes are no longer available, pack the equipment tightly with plenty of foam padding or bubble wrap. Remove all detachable cables and wiring. Label carefully for quick reinstallation. Carefully secure all moveable parts.
Lawn and Garage Items - Drain all gasoline and oil from lawn mowers, weed eaters and other equipment. All batteries should be disconnected. Tie loose items like rakes and hoes together.
Sports Equipment - Small items like balls, rackets and shoes can easily fit into moderate or small boxes without any problems at all. Bigger items like skis and snowboards can be stored without any additional packing whatsoever; however if you’d like a to keep the dust off them, put them in a large plastic mattress bag.
Bikes - Clean and lubricate your bike before you pack it. Then remove the pedals and seat and turn the handlebars in. Ideally bikes should be further dismantled and boxed to protect them during a move. If you don’t box the bike, make sure to drape plastic wrap on top of it while it is in storage. The plastic will keep the bike clean while in storage and help you avoid problems resulting from dust buildup.
